[Nursing Home] Recommended for Sports Day! Exciting Recreational Activities (101–110)
Easy! Beach Ball Recreation

Beach balls are light, easy to throw, and designed with safety in mind.
This time, we’ll introduce some recreational activities using a beach ball.
First, have older adults sit on chairs facing each other.
Place the beach ball on their outstretched legs and pass it to the next person in a relay style.
You could make it a team competition and prepare prizes for the winners to boost excitement.
Another lively option is beach ball soccer target toss: players kick the ball, and whoever gets it into the container first wins.
Since it involves a lot of leg movement, it helps strengthen older adults’ muscles and is also ideal for rehabilitation.
Paper cup drop

Here’s a game using paper cups.
Line up the paper cups in a row.
Use the lined-up cups as targets and have older adults throw a ball at them from a short distance away.
Depending on where you set up the cups, the goal is to throw the ball so that the cups tip over or fall to the floor.
Even if they don’t hit the cups perfectly, it’s likely to spark laughter and provide a nice change of pace.
It can also encourage conversation with others and help expand social interaction among older adults.
Paper cups are sold at 100-yen shops, so preparation is easy.
Brain training! Towel rock-paper-scissors

Like the game “Hit-and-Cover Rock-Paper-Scissors,” this towel rock-paper-scissors trains your reflexes and your brain.
Spread a towel on the table and sit facing your opponent.
Play rock-paper-scissors; if you win, pull the towel toward yourself.
If you lose, hold the towel down firmly so it can’t be taken.
As the game heats up, people often mix up what to do with the towel when they win or lose, which in turn stimulates the brain even more.
Since it’s an exercise you do with someone else, it also encourages communication and lifts your mood!
Dropping Colored Balls

We would like to introduce a color ball drop activity for pairs.
Have two older adults sit facing each other, each holding two sticks by their tips.
Place baskets labeled with colors between them.
Roll balls along the sticks and drop each ball into the basket with the matching color label.
This game emphasizes cooperation between the two participants.
Encourage them to communicate and synchronize their movements.
It’s a fun activity that can spark conversation and help expand social connections.
Newspaper-pulling-with-your-feet game

Here’s a game that gets you moving your feet while having fun and training at the same time.
Have older adults sit in a chair and pull a sheet of newspaper with their feet.
They can pull it with one foot or with both feet together.
You can also have two older adults sit facing each other at a distance and compete—it should be fun.
Besides providing leg exercise, it’s likely to increase interaction among older adults and bring more smiles.
It can also help with a change of pace and stress relief.

Sports day activity

With autumn being the season for sports, many facilities may be planning to hold sports days.
Even if you don’t go as far as a full sports day, how about incorporating common athletic-meet-style games as recreational activities to get people moving? For example, a baton relay where each team lines up in a single file, passes the baton backward down the line, and once it reaches the last person, passes it forward using the opposite hand; or tamaire, where participants sit in a circle with a box in the center and toss balls into it.
Let’s capture the spirit of a sports day with these lively activities and get everyone excited!
obstacle course

We adapted the highlight event of school sports days, the obstacle race, for seniors.
Instead of the seniors competing themselves, cardboard daruma dolls race! Attach casters to the cardboard daruma so they glide easily across the floor, and add a string so seniors can control them with ease.
For obstacles blocking the daruma’s path, slightly raised pieces of cardboard work well.
Avoid making the steps too high, or the daruma won’t be able to get over them.
Keeping the daruma balanced is tricky, and figuring out how to do it is also effective for helping prevent cognitive decline in older adults.
