From around the mid-1970s, Takao Horiuchi was active as a member of Alice, who were scoring major hits in the then-new music scene.

The song I’m introducing today is his 25th single as a solo artist, released in 1993 after Alice disbanded.

While during Alice’s heyday Horiuchi sang with a slightly stronger rock edge than his partner Shinji Tanimura, after going solo he began delivering songs with a somewhat stronger enka flavor, showcasing a matured richness in his vocals.

He’s one of those singers I can confidently recommend to anyone who wants to hear a skillful, sophisticated “adult” vibe.

Since he has an exceptionally long career, it might be fun to listen to his work in chronological order starting from the Alice era!

TAKUMA, the vocalist of 10-FEET, struck me as having exceptionally high-level vocal technique and expressive ability.

His voice is powerful and passionate, yet also capable of conveying delicacy and emotion.

What’s particularly noteworthy is that, even while delivering such emotionally rich performances, his vocal production never becomes sloppy in any part of a song.

He’s a singer who can compellingly communicate a song’s world not only in hard rock numbers but also in slow, melodic ballads, thanks to his outstanding vocal skill and expressiveness.

Rhapsody of TemptationRYUICHI (girudo)

Rhapsody of TemptationRYUICHI (girudo)

This is the 11th single by Guild, a visual kei band under the same agency as the famous visual air band Golden Bomber, released on January 1, 2014.

Visual kei bands sometimes get their musical and vocal abilities downplayed, but that’s definitely not the case with Guild’s RYUICHI! He’s a singer with very strong vocal technique and expressive power.

In fact, I personally know RYUICHI—several years ago I gave him some vocal training lessons, we recorded various songs for fun, and I even directed and produced his vocals during that time.

Even back then, he showed remarkable aptitude and the ability to absorb things quickly.

Because of that, he was someone I really enjoyed teaching and collaborating with.

Setting aside any personal bias, he truly is a wonderful singer, so if you’re a band vocalist, I highly recommend using his singing as a reference!

Keisuke Yamauchi is a young enka singer who debuted in 2001.

It’s been nearly 20 years since his debut, but in the enka world he can still rightly be called a young artist.

As for his vocal ability—well, as expected of an enka singer—it’s remarkably solid and stable.

Influenced by his mother, a huge fan of Hibari Misora, he says he listened to her “almost like prenatal education,” and you can sense Hibari’s influence in many of his fine ornamental phrasing choices.

That said, it’s not as if he sings only in a thoroughly old-school enka style.

He also incorporates elements like slightly nasal high tones that even feel a bit Hiromi Go–like, sprinkling the delicious flavors of Showa-era kayokyoku and Showa pop throughout his songs and delivering them with an easy, expansive voice.

I feel there’s a lot in his singing that singers from other genres could learn from as well.

Kazuyoshi Saito is one of Japan’s leading singer-songwriters.

Since his debut in 1993, he has continued to captivate many fans with his distinctive voice and accessible melodies.

He debuted with the catchphrase “A four-and-a-half tatami room is too small,” and has produced hit songs such as “Aruite Kaerou” and “Yasashiku Naritai.” In 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, he released the ambitious home-recorded album 55 STONES.

His free-spirited musicality unconstrained by genre, along with his versatile talent spanning from solo acoustic performances to full-band styles, is a draw that every music lover should experience at least once.
