Music, Rhythm, and Gymnastics Recreation (21–30)
Tokyo Ondo: Senior Exercise

Some older adults may have danced in yukata at summer festivals, right? There are many different bon-odori songs across Japan.
Each region has its own distinctive style, and “Tokyo Ondo” is one of them.
Its lively call-and-response shouts like “Hai-hai!” and “Yoisho!” are characteristic.
The choreography and the sound of the shamisen further enhance the festive atmosphere.
Of course, it’s also nice to dance while seated.
Since this song is used to cheer for the Yakult Swallows, it may also appeal to older adults who enjoy baseball.
Lively Exercise: Rhythm Gymnastics to Music

We’re introducing “Lively Exercise,” a rhythmic workout done to music.
You can do it seated, and it also helps with breathing and brain training, so please take it slowly and within a comfortable range.
The movement of tapping your knees and raising both hands overhead stretches your upper body from the underarms, so try it in time with the rhythm.
Overall, the movements are simple and easy to imitate.
Let’s keep moving by copying along with the rhythm.
Imitating movements—watching, remembering, understanding, and expressing them—also helps activate the brain.
Enjoy exercising while having fun!
Senior recreational activities using balloons and uchiwa fans (1–10)
Balloon Fly-Away Game

Here’s a simple game you can play using a balloon and beanbags.
Use tape to mark off an area on the floor, and start with the balloon inside that area.
The rule is to throw the beanbags to knock the balloon out of the marked zone.
It’s a simple game, but watching the balloon fly off is so much fun that you’ll likely get really into it.
Since it only involves throwing, it’s also recommended as a game that elderly people with limited mobility can enjoy.
Uchiwa Battle

“Uchiwa Battle” is a simple and exciting recreation game that only requires paper fans and paper cups.
Since you only need to move the fan, it’s great fun even for people with limited mobility.
First, give each participant a fan, divide everyone into two teams, and have them sit on opposite sides of a table.
Line up paper cups in a straight row down the center of the table, and the game begins! Use your fan to blow the paper cups off toward the opponent’s side!
A game where you use a fan to get a balloon out of a basket

Here’s a balloon game that’s perfect for a lively festival atmosphere.
Place several inflated balloons in a basket, and have older adults sit around it holding paper fans.
At the call of “Start,” they fan the air to blow the balloons out of the basket within a set time.
It’s a simple game, but it really gets everyone excited.
Participants can enjoy cooperating with one another and calling out encouragement.
Whether the balloons make it out of the basket or not within the time limit, it’s a game that’s likely to bring smiles to the faces of the older adults.
