Seiban Angel Wings

SEIBAN’s randoseru “Tenshi no Hane” (Angel’s Wings)

A commercial for Seiban, the randoseru (school backpack) maker, featuring their product “Tenshinohane.” It turns out this commercial song has stayed the same for a very long time.

Among them, the version with Hiromichi Sato—Hiromichi Oniisan—who served as the 10th “Exercise Big Brother” on Okaasan to Issho starting in 1995, left a particularly strong impression.

True to his role as the exercise leader, he does calisthenics to that commercial song together with many children wearing randoseru.

It looks very light and agile, and gives a fresh, breezy impression, doesn’t it?

LOTTE TOPPO

2001 Lotte Toppo TOPPO

Since its release in 1994, Lotte’s Toppo has been beloved.

When it comes to Toppo commercials from the 2000s, many people probably immediately think of Tomoya Nagase, formerly of TOKIO.

The jingle is one you just can’t help humming along to, right? There are so many commercials, and they’re all nostalgic.

Watching the older ones in particular, you really feel the nostalgia from Nagase’s hairstyles and the makeup of the other performers.

Young Nagase was so cool, and every ad feels nostalgic—I can’t help but get absorbed in them.

Asahi Soft Drinks Mitsuya Cider

Tears, then Mitsuya Cider

Many people probably remember the final melody that sings the product name—it’s so nostalgic! It’s the perfect-for-summer commercial for Asahi Soft Drinks’ Mitsuya Cider.

The ad features Riko Narumi, who was still a junior high school student at the time.

The CM song is GOING UNDER GROUND’s “STAND BY ME.” As if to encourage Riko Narumi, who’s hanging upside down on the horizontal bar while wrestling with something on her mind, her friend brings her a Mitsuya Cider.

The refreshing, likable visuals and the exhilarating track that perfectly matches the scene evoke a nostalgic feeling that brings back memories of one’s own youth.

Tutor (Home Tutor) no Try

Private Tutoring Try - TV Commercial

Speaking of Try’s private tutoring commercials, the series that dubs lines over characters from the anime Heidi, Girl of the Alps is a familiar one, right? I was shocked to see this ad aimed at a generation that likely doesn’t even know Heidi, but perhaps it was actually appealing to the parents—the investors, so to speak.

Here’s the nostalgic commercial that first put Try in the spotlight.

The ad that used Newton’s cradle to clearly explain a method for memorizing vocabulary left a strong impression.

With a zero enrollment fee, it makes you think, “I might as well give it a try,” doesn’t it?

LIFE CARDJoe Odagiri

LIFE CARD Odagiri Joe TV commercial 1

The 2005 Life Card commercial featuring Joe Odagiri, with the gimmick of him agonizing over cards printed with choices.

Many people probably remember the “Overseas Business Trip” edition that depicts the course of his romance with a female flight attendant.

Odagiri’s humorous performance is captivating and keeps you watching until the end.

Shionogi Healthcare SEDES 2009Anju Suzuki

[CM] Shionogi Pharmaceutical SEDES Anju Suzuki (2009)

This commercial looks back on the history of Sedes and Shionogi Pharmaceutical in confronting pain, conveying the confidence born from that experience.

The visuals alternate between the Sedes package and people suffering from pain, and finally transition to a smiling photo to evoke a sense of reassurance.

The way Anju Suzuki explains with a smile and the variety of products also convey an attitude of standing by the user.

HOT PEPPER

Too nostalgic! Looking back at the dubbed “Hot Pepper” commercials that made waves in the 2000s

There are lots of nostalgic commercials we’ve forgotten, but when we see them we go, “Ah! I remember that!” The Hot Pepper dubbed series is one of those, isn’t it? Back then, every one of those ads was hilarious—a real hit that people of all generations ended up talking about.

They took very serious movie scenes and dubbed them with super comical, addictive Kansai dialect, making you want to watch them all—so nostalgic! The series was so popular it even made a comeback in 2019 using footage from Mad Max.
