Nostalgic commercials from the 2000s: revisiting memorable ads (1–10)
Nissin Foods Cup Noodles “FREEDOM” Version

As part of the FREEDOM-PROJECT, this is one of the commercials that aired between 2006 and 2008.
The animation, created with Katsuhiro Otomo—known as the author of Akira—was used, and many viewers likely paid close attention to its animation style and story.
Even now, watching it is exciting—it’s a captivating commercial.
The BGM features Hikaru Utada’s 2007 release “Kiss & Cry,” a love song with strikingly unique lyrics that even include the words “Nissin Cup Noodles!”
Takefuji

The commercials for Takefuji, which operated until 2010.
Many people probably remember the sight of numerous women performing perfectly synchronized dances like idols or dance groups.
In fact, these women were a dance group called the Takefuji Dancers, composed of members selected through auditions.
The catchy dance track has remained the same since the first broadcast in 1990: “SYNCHRONIZED LOVE” by singer-songwriter and music producer Joe Rinoie.
The impactful choreography stays flawlessly in sync right up to the final pose! It’s a commercial that makes you think, “It looks difficult, but I kind of want to try dancing it.”
Koikeya Polinky

Polinky is a snack released by Koikeya in 1990.
It featured a trio of characters called the Three Polinkies, and the original song that put the snack’s shape and delicious secret into the lyrics was unforgettable! The tune was so catchy that you couldn’t help but hum along, and it surely remains in many people’s memories.
By the way, you might expect the song to reveal the secret, but in the end it wraps up with a cheeky line: “We’re not telling you!”

Aiful

As part of Aiful’s “What should we do? Aiful!” commercial series—and a major cultural phenomenon—this ad began airing in 2002.
The series starts with actor Shogo Shimizu falling in love at first sight with a puppy with round, soulful eyes—a Chihuahua—at a pet shop.
Shimizu’s breakthrough came through this commercial, and thanks to the adorable animal talent, the Chihuahua Ku-chan, long-haired Chihuahuas suddenly surged in popularity nationwide.
The commercial’s success made Ku-chan so popular that even a photo book was released.
LOTTE Fit’s

Fit’s is a chewing gum by Lotte that launched in March 2009.
Its hallmark was a softer chew compared to other gums, paired with a catchy jingle featuring the phrase “funyan-funyan.” The commercials, in which Nozomi Sasaki and Takeru Satoh danced to the CM song, became a major talking point.
The ads ran as a series at the time, with the pair’s dance and a developing storyline—many viewers enjoyed following the new installments.
Plus, Naomi Watanabe also appeared behind the two leads and danced along!
Setagaya Natural Foods Glucosamine

This is a commercial for Setagaya Natural Foods’ supplements, which many people probably remember for its original song, “Guruguru, guruguru, Glucosamine.” If you were an elementary school student in the 2000s, chances are you imitated the move of rotating your knees while singing along.
It’s a good example of a jingle becoming the identity of a commercial.
Combustion-type Amino Formula “Rotating Girl”

The song that plays in this commercial basically just repeats the words “Nenshō-kei Amino-shiki,” but it really stuck in your head, didn’t it? I bet some people found themselves humming it.
What left the biggest impression, though, were the high-difficulty gymnastics and acrobatics shown along with the line “You don’t have to do exercises like this.” Of course, the whole package included the part where you mentally quip, “There’s no way anyone can copy that!!” The drink’s name, “Nenshō-kei,” means “to live life to the fullest,” not “to burn body fat.” It’s the kind of commercial that would probably make waves if it were revived now.
