The song “Kalinka” is used as the BGM in au’s Santaro series commercial, “The Story of Connection.” The ad is so striking you might let the music slip by, but if you listen closely, you’ll realize it’s that tune everyone knows—even if you don’t know its name, it’s the “oh, that song!” one.

This piece is a Russian folk song cherished as a popular Russian sing-along; for some, hearing it instantly evokes the image of Russia.

In Japan, there’s also a Japanese translation of the lyrics by cellist Yorito Inoue, and the song is used as background music in the game Puyo Puyo Tetris.

This song was used in 2013 as the CM track for au’s Apple iPhone 5.

Originally released in 2011 by Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen, the piece achieved commercial success in the United States and subsequently became a massive hit in other countries as well.
