Energy Drink ZONe: “Into the Invincible Zone. yama in the ZONe”

blood flowyama

A song by the singer yama—who has been gaining attention for their style of not revealing their face—has been featured in a commercial for the energy drink ZONe.

While yama is often associated with mid-tempo tracks that feature stylish synth sounds, this song takes an up-tempo, rock-leaning approach.

The lyrics convey a message like “liberate your smoldering self and take a new step forward,” making it a perfect fit for an energy drink commercial that injects power at just the right moment.

Alien Jones Looks Back on the Heisei Era
threadNakajima Miyuki

Set to Miyuki Nakajima’s “Ito,” released in 1992 (Heisei 4), this BOSS commercial features the familiar Alien Jones looking back on the Heisei era.

I used to watch each installment of the Alien Jones series with fun and amusement, but now that the Heisei era has ended, I realize that, in retrospect, it’s become like a documentary capturing each moment in time.

Paired with Nakajima’s classic song, it’s a quietly moving and deeply poignant piece.

Horoyoi “A new Horoyoi. Carbonation renewed (Takeru Sato)” version

Over the Rainbow (Somewhere Over the Rainbow) (A cappella)Sato Takeru, Sawajiri Erika

This is a commercial for Suntory Horoyoi that aired starting in February 2019.

The CM song is Over the Rainbow, a musical number from the film The Wizard of Oz.

It’s sung by Takeru Satoh and Erika Sawajiri, who appear in the commercial, and their harmonies are beautiful.

It’s a melody everyone has heard before, and you can’t help but listen closely.

This song was used in the 2016 commercial for Iyemon featuring Rie Miyazawa and Masahiro Motoki.

Before that, it was also used in a Suntory BOSS commercial.

In recent years, it seems that Yumi Matsutoya has had difficulty hitting the high notes, and her voice sounds a bit different live compared to on CD.

It’s a bit of a shame.

That striking falsetto chorus melody—haven’t most people heard it somewhere before? The song used in the delightfully surreal “Craft Boss” commercial featuring Tommy Lee Jones drifting through space in a spacesuit is “September,” the smash hit by Earth, Wind & Fire, the hugely popular group that helped lead the disco boom of the ’70s.

Not only is it one of the most famous disco songs in the world, it’s also been featured in many Japanese TV dramas and commercials, making it a beloved classic across generations.

As an aside, you might assume from the title that it’s an autumn song, but the lyrics are actually about remembering an event from September during Christmas in December.

A compilation-style commercial covering five years of “Green Dakara-chan,” who charmed all of Japan with her cuteness in the Suntory Green Dakara ads, and her little sister “Mugi-chan.” They cry, laugh, jump, and run—if you let your guard down expecting only their cuteness, you might find yourself moved to tears, thanks to the gentle, warm, and beautiful theme song sung by Antihamon.

It’s certain you’ll grow even more attached to these two girls, whose growth you’ve somehow come to feel up close without even realizing it.

Kakubin 'Kaku Highball: Let’s Make It' Version

You Like Whisky, Don’t You (Cover)Nikaidou Kazumi

[I Tried Singing - No. 218] “Do You Like Whisky?” - Cover
You Like Whisky, Don’t You (Cover)Nikaidou Kazumi

This is a cover by Kazumi Nikaido, who also performed the theme song for Studio Ghibli’s The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.

The jazzy arrangement paired with Nikaido’s sticky, uniquely rhythmic vocal phrasing feels delightful, perfectly evoking the dreamy atmosphere of the bar run by Haruka Igawa.

The humming parts are demure and excellent as well, never intruding on the explanation of how whiskey is made.
